Drew Barrymore

Drew Blythe Barrymore was born on February 22, 1975, in Culver City, California, into the Barrymore family of actors. Her father was actor John Drew Barrymore and her mother was actor Jaid Barrymore. Her ancestry includes the actors Maurice Barrymore, Georgiana Drew, John Barrymore, Dolores Costello, Lionel Barrymore, and Ethel Barrymore.

Barrymore began working as a performer before her first birthday. She appeared in a dog food commercial at 11 months old, and her feature-film debut came in Altered States (1980), in which she played William Hurt's daughter. Her godfather is filmmaker Steven Spielberg, while her godmothers are Sophia Loren and Anna Strasberg.

Barrymore became widely known at seven after playing Gertie in Spielberg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982). That year, she became the youngest person to host Saturday Night Live. Her early success was followed by a highly publicized adolescence involving drug and alcohol abuse, treatment at age 13, and emancipation from her mother at 14. She moved into her own apartment at 15.

Her experiences informed the autobiography Little Girl Lost (1990). During the early 1990s, she appeared in darker roles in films such as Poison Ivy, Guncrazy, and The Amy Fisher Story. Her career began to regain momentum with Boys on the Side (1995), Scream (1996), and Everybody Says I Love You (1996).

Barrymore's transition into adult stardom accelerated with The Wedding Singer (1998), Ever After: A Cinderella Story (1998), and Never Been Kissed (1999). Her recurring screen partnership with Adam Sandler began with The Wedding Singer and continued in 50 First Dates (2004) and Blended (2014). She also became an executive producer on Never Been Kissed.

Barrymore produced and starred in Charlie's Angels (2000) alongside Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu, returning for Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (2003). She helped secure financing for Donnie Darko (2001), in which she played an English teacher, and appeared in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002). Her performance as Edith Bouvier Beale in Grey Gardens (2009), opposite Jessica Lange, earned her a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

Barrymore made her directorial debut with Whip It (2009), a coming-of-age sports film about a teenager who joins a roller derby league. She also directed the music video for Best Coast's song "Our Deal" in 2011, featuring Chloë Grace Moretz, Miranda Cosgrove, Tyler Posey, Donald Glover, Shailene Woodley, and Alia Shawkat.

Her later screen work included Going the Distance, Big Miracle, Miss You Already, and the Netflix series Santa Clarita Diet. In the series, which ran from 2017 to 2019, she played Sheila Hammond and served as an executive producer alongside Timothy Olyphant. Barrymore also appeared in the film The Stand In (2020) and served as a judge on the talent competition The World's Best in 2019.

Barrymore launched the syndicated daytime talk show The Drew Barrymore Show in September 2020. The program combines celebrity interviews, lifestyle segments, and human-interest stories, extending her work beyond acting and film production.

In 2023, she initially planned to resume production during the Writers Guild of America strike, prompting protests and criticism. She later announced that the show's return would be postponed until the strike ended. Barrymore has also expanded her media and lifestyle work through books, the Drew Magazine, and executive-producer roles on projects including Hollywood Squares.

Barrymore was married three times. She married Jeremy Thomas in 1994, and their divorce was finalized in 1995. She married Tom Green in 2001, and their divorce was finalized in 2002. She married Will Kopelman in 2012, and they divorced in 2016.

Barrymore and Kopelman have two daughters, Olive and Frankie. Olive was born in September 2012, three months after Barrymore's wedding to Kopelman, and Frankie was born in April 2014. After their divorce, Barrymore and Kopelman remained on good terms and devoted themselves to co-parenting their children.
