Diane Lane

Lane began acting professionally at age six in La MaMa Experimental Theatre Company's production of Medea in New York City. She performed with the company through 1976 and appeared in productions including The Trojan Women, Electra, The Good Woman of Szechuan, Blood Wedding, and As You Like It, with performances and tours in the United States and abroad.

At age 12, she appeared in Joseph Papp's production of The Cherry Orchard alongside Meryl Streep and Irene Worth. She later returned to the play in a very different role, portraying Madame Lyubov Andreyevna Ranevskaya in a 2016 Broadway production.

At 13, Lane made her feature-film debut in George Roy Hill's A Little Romance opposite Laurence Olivier. Olivier praised the young actress as the new Grace Kelly, and she appeared on the cover of Time at age 14. Her early screen work included Touched by Love, Cattle Annie and Little Britches, Six Pack, and Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains.

Lane's breakthrough came with Francis Ford Coppola's adaptations of S. E. Hinton novels, The Outsiders and Rumble Fish, both released in 1983. She subsequently appeared in Streets of Fire and The Cotton Club, after which she stepped away from film acting for several years.

She rebuilt her career through films such as The Big Town and Lady Beware, followed by the television miniseries Lonesome Dove in 1989. Her performance in the Western earned her a Primetime Emmy nomination and helped reestablish her in the industry.

Lane received renewed critical recognition for playing a frustrated 1960s housewife in A Walk on the Moon (1999), earning an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Female Lead. She followed it with roles in My Dog Skip, The Perfect Storm, The Glass House, and Hardball.

Her performance as Connie Sumner in Adrian Lyne's Unfaithful (2002) became one of the defining roles of her career. She won Best Actress from both the National Society of Film Critics and the New York Film Critics Circle, and received nominations for the Academy Award, Golden Globe, Critics' Choice, and Screen Actors Guild awards.

Lane continued with leading roles in Under the Tuscan Sun, Must Love Dogs, Hollywoodland, Nights in Rodanthe, and Secretariat, in which she portrayed horse owner Penny Chenery. Her television work in Cinema Verite, where she played Pat Loud, brought further Emmy, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild recognition.

Lane returned to the stage in 2012 after a long absence, headlining Tennessee Williams's Sweet Bird of Youth at Chicago's Goodman Theatre opposite Finn Wittrock. She later appeared off-Broadway with Tony Shalhoub in The Mystery of Love and Sex and returned to Broadway in The Cherry Orchard in 2016.

On screen, Lane played Martha Kent in Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League. She also provided the voice of Riley's mother in Pixar's Inside Out and Inside Out 2.

Her later credits include House of Cards, The Romanoffs, Y: The Last Man, Let Him Go, Extrapolations, Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, A Man in Full, and Anniversary. She received a further Primetime Emmy nomination for Feud and an ICON Award from the Newport Beach Film Festival.

Lane was married to actor Christopher Lambert from 1988 until their divorce in 1994. They have one daughter, Eleanor Lambert.

She married actor Josh Brolin in 2004. Their divorce was finalized in 2013, making Lane's two marriages those to Lambert and Brolin.

Lane has supported Heifer International, Artists for Peace and Justice, Oceana, US Doctors for Africa, and the BrandAID Project. Heifer International honored her with its Noble Globe Award and later recognized her humanitarian work at its Beyond Hunger gala.

She appeared prominently in the documentary Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, which focused on women and girls confronting difficult social conditions. Lane has also emphasized keeping her charitable contributions private rather than treating them as publicity.
