Debbie Gibson

Gibson was engaged to music executive Jonathan Kanterman, but the engagement ended in 2003. She was in a relationship with Rutledge Taylor from 2008 to 2019.

Gibson has never married and has no children. She has described remaining unmarried and childless as a choice, and has said that her Lyme disease diagnosis in 2013 affected her consideration of having children. She also has a history of panic attacks beginning when she was 16.

Gibson began composing music as a child and wrote her first song at age five. In 1983, she submitted her original composition "I Come from America" to a WOR radio station song contest. After winning the contest, her family converted their garage into a recording studio with a loan from a relative.

Her self-written song "Only in My Dreams" led to a development deal with Atlantic Records. She released her debut album, Out of the Blue, in 1987 at age 16 after writing and largely producing its material. Four of its singles reached the top five of the Billboard Hot 100, including "Foolish Beat," which made her the youngest female artist to write, produce, and perform a number-one single on that chart.

Her second album, Electric Youth, was released in 1989 and spent five weeks at number one on the Billboard 200. Its single "Lost in Your Eyes" topped the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks. Gibson shared the 1989 ASCAP Songwriter of the Year Award with Bruce Springsteen, and she later continued releasing albums including Anything Is Possible, Body, Mind, Soul, Deborah, M.Y.O.B., Ms. Vocalist, and The Body Remembers.

Gibson made her Broadway debut in 1992 as Éponine Thénardier in Les Misérables. She then played Sandy Dombroski in the London West End production of Grease, which broke box-office records. A recording of "You're the One That I Want," her duet with Craig McLachlan from the production, reached number 13 on the UK Singles Chart in 1993.

Her later theatre roles included Rizzo in a U.S. touring production of Grease, Fanny Brice in Funny Girl, Belle in Beauty and the Beast, Louise Hovick in Gypsy, the Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Cinderella in Cinderella, Velma Kelly in Chicago, and Sally Bowles in the Broadway revival of Cabaret. She also played Marta in a 2004 UCLA Reprise! production of Company and Anna Leonowens in The King and I in 2008.

Gibson made her screen debut in Ghostbusters in 1984. Her film credits later included Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus, Mega Python vs. Gatoroid, Mega Shark Versus Mecha Shark, The Music in Me, Summer of Dreams, and Wedding of Dreams. She starred with Tiffany in Mega Python vs. Gatoroid and reprised her role as Emma MacNeil in Mega Shark Versus Mecha Shark.

Gibson created, executive produced, and starred in the 2016 Hallmark Channel film Summer of Dreams, returning as Debbie Taylor in its 2018 sequel, Wedding of Dreams. She later appeared in the musical episode of Lucifer, judged America's Most Musical Family, competed on Dancing with the Stars with Alan Bersten, and performed as Night Owl on The Masked Singer.

Gibson continued recording and touring after her early pop success. Her 2019 single "Girls Night Out" reached number four on the Billboard Dance Club chart, and she released The Body Remembers in 2021, her first studio album of original songs in two decades. The album included a new version of "Lost in Your Eyes" featuring Joey McIntyre.

In 2019, Gibson performed on the North American Mixtape Tour with New Kids on the Block, Tiffany, Salt-N-Pepa, and Naughty by Nature. She also hosted the SiriusXM program Debbie Gibson's Mixtape. In 2025, she headlined the grand finale of the Rose Parade and released her memoir, Eternally Electric: The Message in My Music.
