Christian McCaffrey

McCaffrey has been married to Olivia Culpo since June 2024. They welcomed their first child, a daughter, in July 2025.

He is the son of former Stanford and NFL wide receiver Ed McCaffrey and former Stanford soccer player Lisa McCaffrey. His brothers include Max, who played wide receiver in the NFL, Dylan, who played quarterback at Northern Colorado, and Luke, a wide receiver for the Washington Commanders. McCaffrey is Catholic and has described his faith as an important part of his life. He is also a lifelong fan of Bruce Lee and has cited Lee's philosophy of calm and balance as an influence.

McCaffrey played college football for the Stanford Cardinal from 2014 to 2016. He contributed as a running back, receiver, kick returner and punt returner, finishing his college career with 6,987 all-purpose yards.

His breakout season came in 2015, when he set the NCAA record for all-purpose yards in a season with 3,864. He also became the first Stanford player to rush for 2,000 yards in a season and was named the Associated Press College Football Player of the Year, a consensus All-American and Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year. He finished second to Derrick Henry in the 2015 Heisman Trophy voting.

In the 2016 Rose Bowl against Iowa, McCaffrey became the first player to record more than 100 rushing yards and more than 100 receiving yards in a Rose Bowl game. His 368 all-purpose yards set a Rose Bowl record. After his junior season, he entered the 2017 NFL draft.

The Carolina Panthers selected McCaffrey eighth overall in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft. He made an immediate impact as a dual-threat running back and receiver, finishing his rookie season with 435 rushing yards, 80 receptions, 651 receiving yards and seven total touchdowns.

McCaffrey's production expanded in 2018. He became the first Panthers player to record more than 100 rushing yards and more than 100 receiving yards in the same game, and he set a franchise record with 237 yards from scrimmage in that contest. He finished the season with 1,965 yards from scrimmage and 107 receptions.

In 2019, he became the third player in NFL history to record at least 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in one season, joining Marshall Faulk and Roger Craig. He finished with 1,387 rushing yards, 1,005 receiving yards and 19 total touchdowns, earning his first Pro Bowl selection and first-team All-Pro honors.

The Panthers traded McCaffrey to the San Francisco 49ers in October 2022. In his first full season with San Francisco in 2023, he led the NFL in rushing yards, scrimmage yards and touchdowns, finishing with 1,459 rushing yards, 2,023 yards from scrimmage and 21 touchdowns. He won the NFL Offensive Player of the Year award and helped the 49ers reach Super Bowl LVIII.

During the 2022 season, McCaffrey became the first 49ers running back to record a passing, rushing and receiving touchdown in the same game. In the 2023 Super Bowl, he became the first player in Super Bowl history to record at least 75 rushing yards and 75 receiving yards in the same game.

McCaffrey missed most of the 2024 season because of calf, Achilles and knee injuries. He returned in 2025 and produced 1,202 rushing yards, 924 receiving yards and 17 total touchdowns during the regular season. He was named the NFL Comeback Player of the Year.

McCaffrey founded the Christian McCaffrey Foundation after entering the NFL. The organization supports servicemembers and veterans, including efforts to prevent veteran suicide, as well as frontline workers, underserved youth and children undergoing medical treatment.

Its Logan Project connects children receiving medical treatment through gaming. The project was created in honor of Logan Hale, a McCaffrey fan who died after battling cancer in 2021.
