Aamir Khan

Aamir Khan was married to Reena Dutta from 1986 to 2002. They have two children, Junaid Khan, an actor, and Ira Khan, an assistant director. Khan married filmmaker Kiran Rao in 2005, and they had a son, Azad Rao Khan, in 2011. Their marriage ended in divorce after they separated in 2021.

Khan has been married to Bengaluru-based entrepreneur Gauri Spratt since July 2026. He was born into a filmmaking family. His father, Tahir Hussain, was a producer, his uncle Nasir Hussain was a producer-director, and his cousin Mansoor Khan is a director, writer, and producer.

Khan first appeared as a child actor in Nasir Hussain's Yaadon Ki Baaraat in 1973 and also appeared in Madhosh in 1974. He returned to the screen in Holi in 1985 after spending several years away from film acting. At 16, he acted in the silent film Paranoia alongside Neena Gupta and Victor Banerjee. He later joined the theatre group Avantar and performed in the Gujarati play Kesar Bina at the Prithvi Theatre.

Khan attended J.B. Petit School, St. Anne's High School, and Bombay Scottish School in Mumbai. He studied Commerce for two years at Narsee Monjee before leaving college to work as an assistant director on Nasir Hussain's films Manzil Manzil and Zabardast.

His first lead role came in Mansoor Khan's Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak in 1988. The film's success established him as a romantic lead and earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut in 1989. He followed it with popular films including Dil, Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, and Rangeela.

Khan demonstrated his range through romantic, comic, action, and dramatic roles. He starred alongside Salman Khan in the cult comedy Andaz Apna Apna and appeared with Kajol, Juhi Chawla, and Ajay Devgn in Ishq. His performance in Raja Hindustani earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Actor, while his role as the Ice-Candy man in Deepa Mehta's Earth received critical acclaim.

The 2001 films Lagaan and Dil Chahta Hai marked a major stage in Khan's career. In Lagaan, he played Bhuvan, a villager who leads his community in a cricket match against British colonizers. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and Khan won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor. Dil Chahta Hai, directed by Farhan Akhtar, influenced youth-oriented Bollywood storytelling and popularized Khan's goatee look among young viewers.

His later performances included the title role in Mangal Pandey: The Rising, the socially engaged drama Rang De Basanti, and roles in Ghajini, 3 Idiots, Dhoom 3, PK, Dangal, Secret Superstar, and Thugs of Hindostan. In Dangal, he portrayed wrestler and coach Mahavir Singh Phogat. The film became the highest-grossing Indian film worldwide.

Khan established Aamir Khan Productions, also known as AKP, and produced Lagaan as one of the company's early successes. The banner also produced Taare Zameen Par, Peepli Live, Delhi Belly, Secret Superstar, Laal Singh Chaddha, and Laapataa Ladies.

Khan made his directorial debut with Taare Zameen Par in 2007. He also starred in the film as Ram Shankar Nikumbh, an arts teacher who supports a child struggling with dyslexia. The film received critical acclaim for its treatment of learning disabilities and academic pressure.

His production work has included films directed or written by other filmmakers, including Kiran Rao's Dhobi Ghat. Khan also served as producer and host of Satyamev Jayate, a television talk show that addressed social issues and premiered in 2012.

Khan received the Padma Shri in 2003 and the Padma Bhushan in 2010, two of India's highest civilian honors. His performances in Lagaan, Raja Hindustani, and Dangal brought him major acting recognition, while Taare Zameen Par established him as a director as well as an actor.

His films developed a substantial audience in China. The nationwide Chinese release of Lagaan helped introduce Indian filmmaking to a wider Chinese audience, followed by the popularity of 3 Idiots, Like Stars on Earth, Ghajini, Dhoom 3, PK, Dangal, and Secret Superstar.

In 2015, Khan drew a nationwide debate after discussing concerns expressed by his then-wife, Kiran Rao, about rising intolerance in India. The backlash led to the withdrawal of his work as a Snapdeal brand ambassador and his removal from the government-sponsored Incredible India tourism campaign. He later clarified that he and Rao did not intend to leave the country.
