Sofía Vergara

Vergara married her high-school sweetheart, Joe Gonzalez, in 1990, and they had a son, Manolo, in 1991. The couple divorced in 1993. She was later engaged to Nick Loeb, with whom she became involved in a legal dispute over frozen embryos created during their relationship.

Vergara married actor Joe Manganiello in 2015. They announced their separation in 2023, and their divorce was finalized in 2024. In 2000, she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at age 28. She underwent surgery and radioiodine treatment, made a full recovery, and takes medication to prevent hypothyroidism.

A photographer discovered Vergara on a Colombian beach when she was 17. She subsequently worked as a model and appeared in a Pepsi commercial for Latin American markets. She studied dentistry for three years at the National University of Colombia but left two semesters before completing her degree to pursue modeling and show business. In 1992, she won Colombia's Look of the Year contest.

Vergara co-hosted the Spanish-language travel show Fuera de Serie from 1995 to 1998 and later hosted A que no te atreves. Her work on Univision programs helped introduce her to audiences in the United States. After her older brother Rafael was murdered during an attempted kidnapping in Colombia in 1998, Vergara moved to Miami with members of her family.

Vergara made her first film appearance in Big Trouble in 2002 and followed it with roles in Chasing Papi, Four Brothers, Meet the Browns, and Madea Goes to Jail. In 2009, she played Matron Mama Morton in the Broadway production of Chicago for six weeks.

That same year, Vergara began playing Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on the ABC sitcom Modern Family. The series ran for 11 seasons and 250 episodes, and Vergara received four consecutive Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series from 2010 through 2013. Her later film credits include The Smurfs, The Three Stooges, Machete Kills, Chef, Hot Pursuit, and Bottom of the 9th.

In 2024, she starred as Colombian drug trafficker Griselda Blanco in the Netflix miniseries Griselda, for which she received a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. The nomination made her the first Latina born in a Latin American country to be nominated in that category.

Vergara joined the judging panel of NBC's America's Got Talent in 2020 alongside Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, and Howie Mandel. She described the position as a new chapter and became the show's first Latina judge.

Her golden buzzer selections included the dance group Mayyas, which won the competition in 2022, and Jessica Sanchez, who won in 2025.

Vergara cofounded the talent-management company Latin World Entertainment in 1994. She later expanded into consumer brands, including a Kmart clothing line, a furniture collection with Rooms To Go, clothing and home collections with Walmart, and an eyewear collection with Foster Grant.

She launched her first fragrance, Sofia by Sofia Vergara, in 2014 and founded the beauty brand Toty in 2023. In 2024, she launched ¡DÍOS MIO! Coffee, a Colombian coffee brand focused on female growers.
