Sarah Hyland

Hyland has lived with kidney dysplasia since childhood, a condition where the kidneys do not form correctly in the womb and develop painful cysts. In April 2012, she underwent a kidney transplant with a kidney donated by her father, Edward James Hyland. When her body began rejecting that kidney years later, her younger brother Ian donated a kidney for a second transplant in September 2017. She takes daily anti-rejection medications and steroids, which make maintaining weight and muscle mass challenging, and she has had sixteen surgeries overall to manage her health, including procedures for endometriosis and a hernia.

In 2017, Hyland began dating television and radio personality Wells Adams. The couple got engaged in July 2019 and bought a home together in Los Angeles the following year. Although the COVID-19 pandemic caused multiple delays to their wedding plans, they married on August 20, 2022, at a California vineyard in a ceremony attended by several of her Modern Family co-stars.

Sarah Jane Hyland was born in the East Village neighbourhood of Manhattan, New York City, to actors Melissa Canaday and Edward James Hyland. She grew up in a theatrical family alongside her younger brother, Ian Hyland, often traveling with her father as he performed at regional theatres across the country. After being homeschooled by her mother until second grade, she entered the public school system and was later accepted into the Professional Performing Arts School in Manhattan, graduating in 2008.

Hyland began acting in commercials and voice-over work at age four and made her feature film debut in 1997 playing Howard Stern's daughter in Private Parts. Her early screen appearances included roles in the films The Object of My Affection, Cradle Will Rock, and Joe Gould's Secret, as well as television credits such as the soap opera Another World and the 1999 television adaptation of Annie, where she played the orphan Molly. On stage, she starred in the title role of Annie at the Paper Mill Playhouse at age eleven and made her Broadway debut portraying young Jacqueline Bouvier in Grey Gardens.

Shortly after moving to Los Angeles at age eighteen, Hyland auditioned for and booked the role of Haley Dunphy in the ABC sitcom pilot My American Family, which was picked up and retitled Modern Family. She portrayed the eldest Dunphy child across all eleven seasons from 2009 to 2020. Alongside her castmates, Hyland won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series four consecutive times between 2011 and 2014, and she received an individual Critics' Choice Television Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2013.

During and following the run of Modern Family, Hyland took on a variety of other television roles. She starred in the Disney Channel Original Movie Geek Charming (2011), portrayed Blanche Barrow in the 2013 miniseries Bonnie & Clyde, played Lisa Houseman in the 2017 television remake of Dirty Dancing, and voiced characters for animated series including Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja and The Lion Guard. In 2022, she joined the main cast of the Peacock musical comedy series Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin and served as host for the fourth and fifth seasons of Love Island USA.

Hyland has maintained an active career in musical theatre and singing. In 2014, she played Chrissy in a production of Hair at the Hollywood Bowl. She returned to New York theatre in 2024 to portray Audrey in the Off-Broadway revival of Little Shop of Horrors opposite Andrew Barth Feldman. On Broadway, she took over the role of Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby in 2025 and subsequently joined the cast of Just in Time as Connie Francis opposite Jonathan Groff.

Her musical work extends to commercial recordings and collaborations. In 2016, she teamed with the acoustic group Boyce Avenue to release covers of "Closer" and "Don't Wanna Know", the latter of which charted on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100. She also performed the single "Met At a Party" with Jordan McGraw at the 2019 Teen Choice Awards. Outside the entertainment industry, Hyland co-founded the chocolate-infused supplement company Sourse in 2021, serving as its creative director.
