Pitbull

Born Armando Christian Pérez in Miami, Florida, to Cuban immigrant parents, he was raised in an environment that celebrated Cuban heritage while encouraging him to seize American opportunities. His mother, Alysha Acosta, arrived in the United States through Operation Peter Pan in 1962, while his father later participated in the 1980 Mariel boatlift. His parents separated during his childhood, and he was primarily raised by his mother, though he spent a brief period living with a foster family in Roswell, Georgia. During his adolescence, he became involved in drug dealing, which led to his mother kicking him out of the family home at age 16.

Pitbull has generally kept his private family life out of the public spotlight. He has two children, a daughter named Destiny and a son named Bryce, with his former long-term partner Barbara Alba, from whom he separated in 2011. Overall, he is reported to have six children.

Pitbull honed his lyrical skills through street freestyle battles around Miami. He selected the stage name Pitbull because he viewed the dog breed as persistent, noting that the animals bite to lock and are too stubborn to lose. While attending Miami Coral Park High School, his talent was noticed by a teacher named Hope Martinez, who arranged for him to attend a DMX music video shoot where he participated in rap battles.

In 2001, he was signed to Luther Campbell's Luke Records and later connected with Atlanta producer Lil Jon. Lil Jon featured him on the track "Pitbull's Cuban Ride Out" from the 2002 album Kings of Crunk, significantly boosting the young artist's profile. Pitbull released his debut studio album, M.I.A.M.I., in 2004 on TVT Records, propelled by the Lil Jon-produced lead single "Culo". In 2005, he partnered with Sean "Diddy" Combs to co-found Bad Boy Latino, an imprint dedicated to Latin hip-hop, soul, and tropical music, before issuing his follow-up studio albums El Mariel in 2006 and The Boatlift in 2007.

Pitbull reached mainstream worldwide success with his fourth album, Pitbull Starring in Rebelution (2009), which featured the major hits "I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)" and "Hotel Room Service". Around this period, he founded his own record label, Mr. 305 Inc., and developed a polished, club-oriented sound combining hip-hop, electronic dance music, and Latin rhythms.

His sixth album, Planet Pit (2011), solidified his global commercial appeal. The single "Give Me Everything", featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack, and Nayer, earned Pitbull his first number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2012, he released Global Warming, which contained the hit "Feel This Moment" featuring Christina Aguilera and the Men in Black 3 theme song "Back in Time". His 2013 single "Timber", featuring Kesha, became another international chart-topper across multiple continents. In 2014, he collaborated with Jennifer Lopez and Claudia Leitte on "We Are One (Ole Ola)", which served as the official theme for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Throughout his career, Pitbull has balanced mainstream pop rap with Spanish-language albums honoring his roots. In 2010, he released Armando, titled in tribute to his late father. His 2015 Spanish-language album Dale won the Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock, Urban or Alternative Album, supported by singles such as "Como Yo Le Doy" and "Piensas (Dile la Verdad)".

He continued releasing Latin-focused albums in subsequent years, including his 2019 independent album Libertad 548, which featured collaborations with Daddy Yankee and Blake Shelton, and Trackhouse in 2023. Over the course of his career, Pitbull has received numerous industry honors, including a Latin Grammy Award, multiple Billboard Latin Music Awards, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Pitbull has expanded his career into various entrepreneurial sectors, including holding an equity stake and ownership in Voli 305 Vodka and investing in the restaurant chain Miami Subs Grill. In 2015, he launched the channel Pitbull's Globalization on SiriusXM Radio. In 2021, he became a co-owner of the NASCAR Cup Series team Trackhouse Racing, a partnership that ran through early 2025.

His philanthropic efforts focus heavily on education and community development. In 2013, he helped establish Sports Leadership and Management (SLAM!), a tuition-free public charter middle and high school in Miami's Little Havana. The SLAM! network has since expanded across multiple states to offer sports- and leadership-focused education in underserved communities. During emergencies, he has also supported relief efforts, including using his private aircraft to transport cancer patients from Puerto Rico to the United States mainland following Hurricane Maria in 2017.
