Mike Israetel is a coach and bodybuilder known for co-founding Renaissance Periodization and explaining strength training, nutrition, and hypertrophy through sports science. Known online as Dr. Mike, he combines academic research, competitive bodybuilding, powerlifting experience, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu training in his work.

Personal life

Mike Israetel married Dr. Christle Guevarra on May 18, 2022. Christle is a sports trainer and fitness enthusiast who trains alongside him.

Israetel keeps his family life relatively private. He has a sister, and his family moved from Russia to the United States in June 1991.

From powerlifting to bodybuilding and Brazilian jiu-jitsu

Israetel developed an interest in strength training and powerlifting while he was young. After training in wrestling during high school, he became more interested in lifting and made notable progress in the bench press. His mentors encouraged him to enter powerlifting competitions, and he later pursued bodybuilding, beginning that transition in 2007.

He also trains in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Josh Vogel. His work has connected grappling with strength training through instructional material such as Weight Training for Grappling. His belt rank is variously given as brown, black, or purple in published profiles.

As an athlete, Israetel has competed in bodybuilding and powerlifting while continuing to coach and study exercise science.

Education, teaching, and sports nutrition

Israetel earned a Ph.D. in Sport Physiology from East Tennessee State University. His research has examined physiological adaptations to resistance training and the effects of nutrition on body composition and athletic performance. He studied under exercise physiologist Michael Stone.

His teaching work has included exercise science positions at Lehman College, Temple University, and the University of Central Missouri. His courses and lectures have focused on nutrition, strength, hypertrophy, and sports science.

He previously served as a sports nutrition consultant for the U.S. Olympic Training Site in Johnson City, Tennessee. He has also spoken at scientific and performance conferences, including seminars at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid.

Renaissance Periodization

Israetel co-founded Renaissance Periodization, also known as RP Strength, with Nick Shaw. The two met while studying at the University of Michigan and training in the weight room, where they shared interests in kinesiology, powerlifting, bodybuilding, and science-based nutrition.

Israetel left New York City in 2010 to begin his Ph.D. program, while Shaw operated a training company. Their frequent referrals of clients to each other eventually led them to establish the organization. Israetel wrote early programming and templates, conducted research, and developed training and diet materials for the company.

At RP Strength, he has served as Chief Content Officer and Chief Sport Scientist, as well as a public face of the Renaissance Periodization YouTube channel. The company provides training and nutrition coaching for athletes and fitness enthusiasts.

Books and training philosophy

Israetel has coauthored The Renaissance Diet 2.0, Scientific Principles of Hypertrophy Training, Scientific Principles of Strength Training, Recovering from Training, The Minicut Manual, and How Much Should I Train? He has also written or contributed to fitness and nutrition works including The Renaissance Diet and Understanding Healthy Eating.

His approach to training emphasizes modern periodization, which integrates progression, variation, specificity, and fatigue management rather than treating linear, conjugate, or undulating systems as wholly separate methods. He argues that training plans should be adjusted to an athlete's needs and tolerance while preserving foundational principles.

In nutrition, he has emphasized calorie balance as the most important factor for body composition, followed by macronutrient ratios, meal timing, food composition, and supplements. He has also argued that muscle gain and fat loss are best treated as distinct phases and that sustainable progress requires time rather than shortcuts.
