Kristy Greenberg

Kristy Greenberg is married to Michael Sheehan, a partner at Sidley Austin. They have two children and reside in New York City.

Greenberg and Sheehan have been described as balancing demanding careers with family life. Her public profile focuses primarily on her legal and media work.

Greenberg graduated from Yale University summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree and earned distinction in history. She then attended Harvard Law School, receiving a Juris Doctor degree cum laude in 2004.

After law school, she worked as a litigation associate at Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP from 2004 to 2010. The six-year period in private practice gave her experience in high-stakes litigation before she moved into federal prosecution.

Greenberg served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of New York from 2010 to 2019. She later served as Acting Co-Chief of the General Crimes Unit from 2019 to 2020 and as Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division from 2020 to 2022.

Her prosecutorial work included health care fraud, financial crime, and cybercrime investigations. As a senior prosecutor, she also guided other attorneys and helped oversee major criminal cases.

In 2018, Greenberg received the Top Prosecutor Award from the Women in Federal Law Enforcement Foundation. She also conducted cybercrime training for prosecutors, regulators, law enforcement agents, law firms, and law students.

Greenberg handled a case involving three Chinese nationals accused of insider trading based on information obtained by hacking the computer networks of prominent U.S. law firms. The prosecution illustrated the connection between cyber intrusions and financial-market crime.

She also prosecuted a Bahamian national for hacking celebrity email accounts to obtain personal information and copyrighted movie and television scripts. Another case involved an individual who attempted to hack the Clinton Foundation and damaged its network.

These cases established Greenberg's public reputation in cybercrime, digital investigations, and complex financial offenses. Her work required prosecutors and investigators to connect technical evidence with traditional criminal charges.

Greenberg joined MSNBC and MS NOW as a legal analyst in March 2024. In that role, she provides commentary on court proceedings, federal investigations, legal developments, and public policy.

Her television appearances have included The Katie Phang Show and The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart. Her transition from federal prosecution to broadcast analysis has brought her courtroom experience to a national audience.
