Christopher Lloyd

Christopher Lloyd has been married five times. He was married to Catherine Boyd from 1959 to 1971, Kay Tornborg from 1974 to about 1987, Carol Ann Vanek from 1988 to 1991, and screenwriter Jane Walker Wood from 1992 to 2005. He married Lisa Loiacono in 2016.

Loiacono was Lloyd's real estate agent when he sold his Montecito, California, home in 2012. The property was destroyed in the Tea Fire in 2008. Lloyd is the uncle of actor Sam Lloyd, who played lawyer Ted Buckland on Scrubs.

Lloyd began acting as a summer-stock apprentice and later studied at New York City's Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre with Sanford Meisner. He made his New York theatrical debut in Fernando Arrabal's And They Put Handcuffs on the Flowers in 1961, followed by his Broadway debut in Red, White and Maddox in 1969. His stage work included Kaspar, The Seagull, Macbeth, Total Eclipse, Happy End, Waiting for Godot, King Lear, and The Caucasian Chalk Circle.

He worked in more than 200 stage productions before moving into film. His screen debut came as psychiatric patient Max Taber in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in 1975, a film starring Jack Nicholson. To prepare for the role, Lloyd spent several weeks in a mental institution and modeled the character on one of its patients.

Lloyd earned an Obie Award and a Drama Desk Award for his theater work. He also appeared with Meryl Streep in a Yale production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, in which he played Oberon and Streep played Helena.

Lloyd's signature film role is the eccentric inventor Dr. Emmett "Doc" Brown in Back to the Future (1985), Back to the Future Part II (1989), and Back to the Future Part III (1990). He starred alongside Michael J. Fox, whose character Marty McFly forms the central partnership of the trilogy. Lloyd later reprised Doc Brown in Back to the Future: The Game, promotional projects, a short film, and other appearances.

Other prominent film performances include Klingon Commander Kruge in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Professor Plum in Clue, Judge Doom in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and Uncle Fester in The Addams Family and Addams Family Values. In Addams Family Values, he played opposite Joan Cusack, with whom he said he developed strong comedic chemistry. He also appeared with Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston in the two Addams Family films.

Lloyd received an Independent Spirit Award for his supporting performance in Twenty Bucks. His later film credits include Mr. Goodman in Piranha 3D, Bill Crowley in I Am Not a Serial Killer, David Mansell in Nobody and Nobody 2, and the Alchemist in Man and Witch: The Dance of a Thousand Steps.

Lloyd became widely known on television as the ex-hippie cab driver Reverend Jim Ignatowski on the sitcom Taxi. He won two Primetime Emmy Awards for the role and has described Taxi, which also featured Danny DeVito, Marilu Henner, Judd Hirsch, Andy Kaufman, and Tony Danza, as one of the productions that stands out most in his career.

He won a third Primetime Emmy for playing Alistair Dimple in an episode of Road to Avonlea. His other television work includes Amazing Stories, Deadly Games, Tremors, Stacked, Granite Flats, 12 Monkeys, Roseanne, The Conners, The Mandalorian, and Hacks. He also reunited with former Taxi co-star Judd Hirsch in an episode of Numb3rs and with Michael J. Fox in an episode of Spin City.

As a voice actor, Lloyd played Merlock in DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp, Grigori Rasputin in Anastasia, the Hacker in Cyberchase, and the Woodsman in Over the Garden Wall. He also voiced Xehanort in Kingdom Hearts III Re Mind and Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory, and Pachacamac in Knuckles.

Lloyd has continued taking film, television, stage, and video-game roles rather than retiring. His later appearances include Commissioner Helgait in The Mandalorian, Professor Orloff in Wednesday, David Mansell in Nobody 2, and Clive in Happy's Place. He has said that he enjoys approaching each character through the script, costume, appearance, and physical details, whether the part is a leading role or a cameo.

He has described his acting process as more confident and consistent than it was earlier in his career. Lloyd is also known for his deep, gravelly voice, animated facial expressions, and distinctive physical presence. Outside acting, he enjoys cycling, hiking, fly-fishing, reading, going to the gym, and studying scripts.
