Chris Bumstead, also known as CBum, is a Canadian retired professional bodybuilder and entrepreneur. He became internationally known for winning six consecutive Mr. Olympia Classic Physique titles from 2019 through 2024, the longest winning streak in the division's history. His emphasis on aesthetics and classic proportions helped bring mainstream attention to modern bodybuilding.

Early life

Bumstead was born and raised in Stittsville, Ottawa, Ontario. During his school years, he played football, baseball, basketball, hockey and track and field, developing an early interest in athletic training and physical development. He later attended Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he earned a degree.

He began weightlifting at 14. Over the following four years, he increased his body weight from 170 to 225 pounds, with particularly notable growth in his legs. His early bodybuilding influences included Tom Platz, Barry DeMay and Arnold Schwarzenegger, whose physiques reflected the proportions and presentation style that Bumstead later pursued.

Early beginnings (2008-2016)

Bumstead's introduction to competitive bodybuilding was closely connected to Iain Valliere, his sister Melissa Valliere's boyfriend at the time. Valliere recognized his potential, coached him through his early preparation and became an important mentor as Bumstead developed his physique. Bumstead made his competitive debut in 2014 at 19 years old, appearing in an Ontario regional show alongside Melissa Valliere. Both won their overall titles, with Bumstead taking the junior title.

In 2016, Bumstead won the IFBB North American Bodybuilding Championship and earned his IFBB professional card at 21. He placed third overall in his first professional show. He also finished first in the junior division of the 2015 CBBF Canadian National Bodybuilding Championship and second in the open heavyweight division of the 2016 CBBF Bodybuilding Championships.

Earning IFBB pro card and early success (2016-2019)

Bumstead quickly established himself as a leading Classic Physique competitor after turning professional. In 2017, he won both the IFBB Pittsburgh Pro and the IFBB Toronto Pro Supershow. That year, he made his Mr. Olympia debut and finished second in the Classic Physique category, repeating the runner-up result in 2018.

His preparation for the 2018 Mr. Olympia was disrupted by severe water retention related to a kidney complication. He spent three nights in an emergency room four weeks before the contest, then continued training despite the setback. He later entered the 2019 Olympia after undergoing hernia surgery several months before the event.

Mr. Olympia Classic Physique winning streak (2019-2024)

Bumstead won his first Mr. Olympia Classic Physique title in 2019 after finishing second in the previous two contests. He defended the title in 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024, becoming a six-time consecutive champion. His competition history also includes first-place finishes at the 2017 Pittsburgh Pro and Toronto Pro, followed by six Olympia victories and a second-place finish in the 2024 EVLS Prague Pro Men's Open division.

His approach emphasized symmetry, aesthetics, a tight waist and classic lines rather than maximum size. In 2022, he began working with coach Hany Rambod after Iain Valliere ended his coaching role while preparing to compete in the Open division. Bumstead announced his retirement after winning his sixth Olympia title on October 13, 2024. He later entered the Prague Pro Men's Open contest as a final appearance and finished second before confirming his retirement.

Training Regime

Bumstead's training has included a five-day structure focused on back, chest and biceps, hamstrings and glutes, shoulders and triceps, and quadriceps. Exercises associated with his routines include deadlifts, rows, squats, leg presses, incline dumbbell presses and machine work. He has identified barbell squats, incline dumbbell presses and bent-over barbell rows among his favorite exercises.

His training methodology changed after he began working with Hany Rambod, whose FST-7 system is based on fascia stretch training. Bumstead has also used ice baths as part of his recovery routine and trained at home for several months during the pandemic before returning to a gym setting.

Business Endeavors and Personal Life

Bumstead expanded his career beyond competition through fitness and apparel businesses. He launched Cbum Apparel and joined RAW Nutrition's ownership team in 2021, later creating a signature line of supplements that includes pre-workouts and protein powders. In 2024, he became a part-owner and athlete for Gymshark. He has also produced online training and nutrition content through social media, YouTube, podcasting and online coaching.

His health has influenced his approach to nutrition. He has discussed living with IgA nephropathy and the need to carefully consider foods and supplements, particularly during contest preparation. His competition diet has included multiple structured meals built around eggs, oats, rice, fish, chicken, vegetables and whey protein. Bumstead became engaged to Courtney King in September 2022. King is a former IFBB Bikini Olympia champion.
