Cate Blanchett

Blanchett married writer, playwright, and director Andrew Upton in 1997. The couple first met on a film set in 1996 and connected shortly thereafter, marrying before Blanchett left for England to film Elizabeth. Together, they established the production company Dirty Films to produce independent film and television projects.

The couple has four children: three sons named Dashiell, Roman, and Ignatius, and an adopted daughter named Edith. Blanchett and Upton raised their family in Australia for many years, purchasing and renovating a historic Sydney property named Bulwarra before relocating to the United States in 2015.

Blanchett grew up in the Melbourne suburb of Ivanhoe, raised by her mother June after her father Robert died of a heart attack when she was ten years old. She studied art history at the University of Melbourne before enrolling at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Sydney, graduating in 1992.

Immediately following drama school, Blanchett built a formidable reputation on the Australian stage. She joined the Sydney Theatre Company for productions including Caryl Churchill's Top Girls and Timothy Daly's Kafka Dances, which earned her the Newcomer Award from the Sydney Theatre Critics Circle. In 1993, she starred opposite Geoffrey Rush in David Mamet's Oleanna, winning the Rosemont Best Actress Award. She also performed as Ophelia in Hamlet for the Belvoir Street Theatre Company and appeared in Australian television dramas such as Heartland and Bordertown.

Blanchett made her feature film debut in Bruce Beresford's World War II drama Paradise Road (1997), followed by leading roles in Thank God He Met Lizzie and Oscar and Lucinda. Her major international breakthrough came when director Shekhar Kapur cast her as the young English monarch in Elizabeth (1998). Her performance tracing the monarch's transformation from vulnerable adolescent to authoritative ruler earned her a Golden Globe Award, a BAFTA Award, and her first Academy Award nomination.

Following Elizabeth, Blanchett took on diverse roles in films such as The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), Pushing Tin (1999), The Gift (2000), and Bandits (2001). Beginning in 2001, she gained worldwide recognition as the royal elf Galadriel in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings fantasy trilogy, a role she later reprised in The Hobbit film series.

In 2004, Blanchett portrayed Hollywood screen legend Katharine Hepburn in Martin Scorsese's Howard Hughes biopic The Aviator, winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. In 2007, she achieved the rare distinction of receiving two Oscar nominations in the same year: Best Actress for reprising her royal role in Elizabeth: The Golden Age, and Best Supporting Actress for portraying an incarnation of Bob Dylan during his electric period in Todd Haynes's I'm Not There.

Blanchett won her second Academy Award, for Best Actress, for her portrayal of a fallen New York socialite in Woody Allen's drama Blue Jasmine (2013). Her acclaimed filmography expanded with starring roles in Todd Haynes's romantic period drama Carol (2015), Kenneth Branagh's live-action Cinderella (2015), the Marvel blockbuster Thor: Ragnarok (2017) as the villain Hela, and Todd Field's drama Tár (2022), which brought her another Golden Globe Award and Oscar nomination.

Alongside her film work, Blanchett has maintained an extensive commitment to theater. From 2008 to 2013, she and Andrew Upton served as joint artistic directors of the Sydney Theatre Company. During her tenure, she headlined major stage productions including Hedda Gabler, The War of the Roses, A Streetcar Named Desire, and Uncle Vanya.

Blanchett made her Broadway debut in 2017 starring in The Present, an adaptation of Anton Chekhov's play Platonov written by Upton. Her performance as Anna Petrovna earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Play. That same year, she was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) for eminent service to the performing arts.
